The fact that someone can say that men are better at math and science than women because of biological reasons is crazy. I think that women are just as good at math and science as men no matter what some statistics might say. It all depends on the person and what they wish to achieve. I personally am not good at math or science, but this is because I never took interest in the subject. I worked hard in my math and science courses and got B's, and that was good enough for me. To say that men come into this world with the advantage of math and science is wrong. These subjects are something that you learn starting at a young age. There may be more men in the world who are interested in math and science but I believe that the ideas we've been talking about over the past weeks have a lot to do with it. From the beginning women have been seen as being the stay at home, cook and clean type. We weren't given the opportunity to advance in these subjects. Over time this theme has stuck with society. Its not a biological difference, its a difference made up by members of society. I think that most people do not even recognize these issues because it's something that they've become accustomed to, it's invisible. I think back to commercials I saw growing up and remember to chemistry sets with green oooz and goo that were geared towards boys. If thats not society teaching boys that they should hold a career in science then I don't know what is.
I think that society, no bilogical reasons are what creates the statistics that we see today. Men and women are similar in many ways. We learn what careers we should and shouldn't do growing up according to what gender we are. This isn't grounds for saying that men are smarter when it comes to math and science.
DQ:
1. Did your parents or teachers tell you growing up what careers they thought you should hold? Did these options show gender neutrality?
2. How should society go about getting women interested in careers in math and science?
Great points, I totally agree with what you are saying and I was in the same boat in school when it came to math and science. Women are just as good at math and science as men, its all about what you wanna do in life and how you apply yourself.
ReplyDeleteId say for the second question that it starts when women are young and being raised...it should be encouraged in the upbringing of homes.
